How to change your account email

You can change your account email from Account settings, and the change is confirmed at the new address before it takes effect. Your password stays exactly as it is.

One address does two jobs on this account. It is what you sign in with, and it is where invoices, receipts and one-time sign-in codes are sent. There is no separate login address to keep track of, so a change here moves both at once.

The Email address card in Account settings, headed with an envelope icon, reading that this is the address you sign in with and the one invoices, receipts and sign-in codes are sent to and that changing it is confirmed at the new address first. Below it reads Currently benny@enterrahost.com, followed by a Change email address button.
The card shows the address you sign in with. Changing it asks for the new address and your password before sending the confirmation.

Why it asks you to confirm the new address first

Typing an address is easy to get wrong by one character, and the address is the thing you would need in order to recover the account. If a change took effect the moment you pressed the button, a typo would move your account to a mailbox you cannot read, and the recovery email would go to whoever owns that mailbox.

So nothing changes until you open a link sent to the new address. Until then your current address keeps working exactly as before. If the new address was wrong or belongs to somebody else, you simply never open the link and the request expires on its own. Nothing to undo and nothing to ask us for.

How to change your account email

Open Account settings and find the card headed Email address. It shows the address you currently sign in with.

Press Change email address and you get two fields. The new address, and your current password. The password is asked for because this is the one change that can move an account to a different person, and a browser left open on a shared machine should not be enough on its own.

The link that arrives expires in an hour and works once. Open it and the change is done, whether you open it on the same device or on a phone. You do not need to be signed in to confirm, which matters when the new mailbox is the one you read on your phone.

What happens once it is confirmed

The new address becomes the one you sign in with, and the one invoices and codes go to. Sign in with the new address from then on. The old address stops working as a sign-in address immediately.

We also email the old address to say the change happened. That message is the point of having it. If you did not make the change, it is the one warning that reaches you rather than the person who did, and it is worth acting on quickly.

A few things it will not do

It will not change your password, and it is not a way to reset one you have forgotten. If that is the problem, the sign-in page has a Forgot your password? link, and how to log in covers both recovery routes.

It will not let you use an address that is already on another account. The sign-in address is unique across the whole platform, so the form tells you straight away if the address is taken rather than accepting it and failing later.

It will not change your name, your billing address or your phone number. Those live on the same page, in Your details, and changing the phone number is worth taking seriously, because one-time codes are texted to it. Updating your billing details covers those fields.

If the confirmation link does not arrive

Check the spam folder first, because a message from a host about a changed account address is exactly the shape of message a filter is suspicious of. The link is valid for an hour, so there is time to look.

If it has expired, start again. Nothing was half-applied in the meantime, so a second request is a clean run rather than a fix for a stuck one. Requests are limited, so give it a moment and read the message the form returns rather than pressing the button repeatedly.
